Education for Children

PREPARING CHILDREN & YOUTH TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE

  • The Issue: Children who start kindergarten ready to learn, and who stay on track as they grow, have the best chances of achieving in school, attaining self-sufficiency as adults, and contributing to the economic vitality of our region.

WHAT MATTERS: SUCCESS BY SIX

  • Research shows that high quality early learning experiences can counteract the effect of risk factors like poverty on children’s school performance and produce benefits that last into adulthood. Investments in quality early childhood development have been found to generate returns as high as $17 for every dollar spent.
  • Quality is critical, but only 22 percent of children in the region who are in care at early learning center, are attending centers known to be of good or high quality.

UNITED WAY IN ACTION

United Way and its partners are working to:

  • Improve the school readiness of 20,000 more children by bringing another 320 early learning centers up to the highest levels of quality.
  • Develop creative ways of engaging parents as partners in early learning.
  • Team with the business community to educate employees about how and why to find quality care that fosters early learning.
  • Advocate for public investment in expanding early learning opportunities.

WHAT MATTERS: STAYING ON TRACK FOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION

  • A high school diploma is a critical foundation for building self-sufficiency and family financial stability. Employed high school dropouts earn an average of $9,200 less per year than their peers who have graduated, and dropouts are far more likely to be unemployed, live in poverty, rely on public assistance, or be incarcerated.
  • Quality mentoring relationships and out-of-school time opportunities can instill the personal and academic skills young people need to stay on track for graduation.

UNITED WAY IN ACTION

United Way and its partners are working to:

  • Increase the school success of more than 50,000 students by improving the quality of 400 afterschool, summer, and mentoring programs.
  • Engage more than 500 men of color to become effective mentors for at risk young people.
  • Team with other large cities to create and share innovative strategies for connecting with today’s urban youth.
